Evart, Pine River boys set for district openers

EVART — Evart’s boys basketball team ended the regular season at 7-13 and will play Morley Stanwood Wednesday night in a semifinal Class C district game at Hesperia.

“They like to run and gun,” said Evart coach Kris Morgan. “They’re really athletic.”

Evart ended its regular season Thursday in a 51-34 loss at home to McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

The Wildcats trailed 29-18 at halftime. Jarek VanOrder, who scored 25 points the first time against NMC, netted 10 this time. Preston Boyd and Jesse Lang added six points apiece.

“We struggled on offense,” Morgan said. “We have to score on Wednesday. We’ve had a hard time putting the ball in the basket.”

The Bucks closed the regular season on Thursday with a 62-44 win over Manton to improve to 14-6.

Pine River was up 26-18 at halftime and 44-28 after the third quarter.

“It was a great night, senior night,” said Pine River coach Scott Benson. “It took us awhile to get going. We later got it together.”

Zane Kanouse had 11 points and seven boards to lead the Bucks. Lincoln Erickson added 10 points.

“Everyone got to play,” Benson said. “It was a good way to end (the home season). It was senior night. They front our big guys and our guards penetrated. It was a good all-around game.”

Wednesday night, Pine River is at Clare in Class C district semifinal action against McBain. The winner faces Harrison or Clare on Friday. McBain lost to Clare earlier in the season.

“I’ll tell you right now that McBain isn’t thinking about us,” Benson said. “They’re thinking about Clare.”
