Evart Little League team posts 12-0 season

EVART — It was a perfect season in the Reed City-Evart Little League's minor division for the Ventra team out of Evart.

The team was coached by Mark Sichocki of Evart, who said the squad consisted mostly of 9-10-year-old players.

“We had several close games,” Sichocki said. “We played teams from the Big Rapids, Evart and Reed City areas. There were a couple of games that went into the last inning.”

Sichocki was encouraged with the progress his players made.

“We had a combination of boys that pitched well, threw the ball well and caught the baseball,” he said. “We worked on running the bases and knowing where to throw the ball.”

Sichocki said coaches worked with players for them to think what they would do with the ball once it came to them.

“The last game of the season, we beat an undefeated Reed City team,” he said. “I didn't realize that until we were in the middle of the year.”

Sichocki added that there were more 9 and 10-year-olds on the team and there were a couple of 8-year-old players.

“Some have played before in that league,” he added noting that for some it was the first actual league in which they experienced player-pitch.

A 9-10-year-old area all-star team has formed and Sichocki said he has three of his players on the squad. The first game will be July 10.

Jason O'Dell from Evart is the divisional coordinator.

“Local boys who participated in the Reed City-Evart Little League’s minor division were instructed in the rules of the game, the need for teamwork and the self-discipline of sportsmanship,” O'Dell said. “These 'boys of summer' talked the 'lingo' of the game and showed their blossoming skills on the diamond. Even more, game in and game out, excitement was written on the faces and in the smiles of each and every ballplayer. It was a fantastic season.”

The Evart Minor Division teams were the Osceola Grand Hotel coached by Lee Helmer, Campbell Excavating coached by Brian Cass and Ventra.
