Evart Figure 8 driver enjoying competitive summer

EVART — Summer time means Figure 8 driving for Evart’s Jack Schooley.

The area resident has been making plenty of stops this summer. Earlier this month, he competed in Figure 8 competition at the Clare County Fair in Harrison.

“We do about 10 a year,” he said.

Schooley this summer has also been to Figure 8 racing in Farwell twice, to Marion and to Fowlerville. He’s been a Figure 8 driver for 10 years.

“My brother ran one, I watched for five or six years, then I got involved,” Schooley said.

He’s taken a second place at Marion and a fourth at Fowlerville in a feature. He hasn’t had a first place yet this year but has been happy with his progress so far.

“I just try to drive clean and stay out of trouble,” he said.

The season for Schooley starts on Memorial Day weekend and continues until September when the USA Demolition Derby conducts the state championship at Munger.

Schooley runs Schooley Auto Repairs in Evart.

“My brother, Jim has rolled over his car a couple of times but it’s normally a safe sport,” Schooley said. “He was the (state) championship in 2009. He’s better than me.”

Jack Schooley hopes to stay with the sport for a long time.

“It’s getting more expensive,” Schooley said. “I like visiting with the guys before the race and meeting new friends. It’s friendly competition. We see the same group of guys all the time. You get a few locals show up.”
