Dillard off to strong start for Reed City boys

REED CITY — Mykel Dillard has been making some key contributions for the Reed City boys basketball team and is hoping that will continue in upcoming weeks.

Dillard, a junior, had one of his best games earlier this month at home in a 70-49 win over Tri County when he scored 15 points. It’s his first varsity season. He was on the Reed City JVs last year. But he topped that five games later at Evart with 22 points and five 3-pointers in an 82-57 victory.

“It’s a faster game,” he said of the transition from the junior varsity to varsity. “I’ve gotten a little better. I have to work on my defense a little more.”

Dillard said his role for the Coyotes is rather simple: “Attack, shoot.”

He seems to be doing well in both aspects. His outside shooting and driving to the basketball also have seemed to be strong weapons so far. His 3-point shooting also appears to be solid and not just his.

“We have some shooters on this team,” he said. “Pretty much every position is a shooter”

The Coyotes are 2-2 going into the holiday break.

“The press is getting better,” Dillard said. “We have to get quicker uptempo so we’ve got to get our subs in. They have to go hard three minutes.”

Dillard wants to improve on his defense, “and not letting my guy get by me.”

He also wants to be more disciplined to avoid committing excessive fouls.

As the Coyotes get ready for the post-holiday break, Dillard is confident his team can have a solid season.

“Work together and play defense is the key in every game,” he said. “I’m getting confident now.”
