BIG RAPIDS - Paris area resident Kyle Randall, host of TV's Wilderness Journal, likes what he sees of area hunting and fishing prospects.

"(Friday) was the opening of deer archery season and I know there's an awful lot of folks in the area looking forward to that," Randall said. "They've been seeing some really nice deer. I'm seeing some nice deer locally. We just wrapped up our youth deer season a couple of weeks ago. That went well for a lot of local youngsters. There were a lot of nice deer taken. I heard a lot of encouraging stories."

Randall has also heard very promising reports on the salmon run.

"On the river, it's heating up really well," he said. "I talked to a fellah on Wednesday at the big Manistee and they took their limit. They have a good time. This mild weather is encouraging people to be out and about.

"Saturday is the opening of duck season. There's a lot going on. Fall turkey season is open. There's been some nice hens brought in. Things are going well in the outdoors right now."

Mornings with cooler temperatures might be good for anglers and hunters, Randall said.
