Coyotes take two against Evart
Reed City, Evart play last-minute twinbill as districts approachEVART — Reed City and Evart arranged at the last minute on Wednesday for a nonleague doubleheader and the Coyotes prevailed 10-1 and 15-6 in a pair of six-inning affairs. Reed City's scheduled doubleheader with Central Montcalm was canceled and will not be made up. Central's predistrict game on Tuesday was rained out and the Hornets replayed it Wednesday. Evart had a doubleheader with Montabella rained out on Tuesday. In district action this weekend, Evart plays Morley Stanwood at Lakeview and Reed City faces Manton at Pine River. Both teams wanted some game time going into Saturday's districts. "I didn't want to take a week off but wanted to get in these two games," Reed City coach Scott Shankel said. "I wanted the kids to see live pitching and be in a game situation." "We worked it out with Reed City last night," said Evart coach Pat Craven. "We both had openings and we wanted to play. We thought it'd be important to get our games in." In the first game, Ray Phenix was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and allowing three hits. Ryan Wilis finished in relief. Sean Woodside had two hits and an RBI for Reed City. Josh Saez had a hit and three stolen bases. Jordan Rolston contributed three hits and two RBIs while Phenix had two hit, one RBI and two runs scored and Scott Lenahan had a hit and RBI. Reed City had single runs in the third and fourth innings, three in the fifth and five in the sixth. Evart scored one run in the third. Reed City had four runs in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the the sixth in the nightcap. Evart had a single run in the fourth and five in the sixth. Willis went the first two innings of the second game and fanned two batters while not allowing a hit. Jordan Straub went the next two and allowed one hit while striking out four. Woodside had two hits and three RBIs with two runs score. Straub had two hits as did Eric Grannis and Rick Droke, who both scored three runs. Austin Hansen had three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor Weiss had two hits and an RBI. Reed City is 7-22. The Coyotes finished the CSAA season at 1-15. Reed City beat Manton twice earlier in the year. "Hopefully, we'll be in the finals," Shankel said. Evart is 10-15.Evart didn't play Morley Stanwood this season. "We'll have to pay well," Craven said. "Hopefully our stating pitching can keep it close and we can work the ball in the batter's box. Morley Stanwood is a good team."
