REED CITY – The home mat advantage produced three wins for the Reed City wrestling team at its home invitational on Saturday.

Reed City opened the day with wins over Elk Rapids 54-29 and Cheboygan 46-31, but then lost 54-20 to Mason County Central. After a 57-20 win over Hesperia’s B team, the Coyotes lost to Byron Center 50-27.

Mason County Central won with a 5-0 record while Byron Center was 4-1 and Reed City 3-2.

Adam Kehr was 5-0 at 140 while Thayne Stieg had four wins at 125 and Travis French four victories at 171.

Jimmy Bywater (103), Devon Ward (152), Jared Shyrock (160) and Dominic Garcia (189) were all 3-2.

Reed City now has a 9-11 record.

“I thought some of our guys had a couple of good weeks of practice over the holidays,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “Thayne Stieg at 125 and Travis French at 171 came in and did a nice job. Adam Kehr improved his record to 19-1. Adam has been solid for us all year.”

Kehr, a junior, had two pins on Saturday.

“Adam put a lot of effort into his offseason training,” Steig said. “I’m encouraged with his chances this year. He has to stay healthy. But he’s been real solid. I like his chances of placing high in the state.”

Reed City wrestles Wednesday at Lakeview against the host school and Holton in Central State Activities Association.

“We have a few adjustments to make,” Steig said. “Coming back from the holidays, five of our wrestlers were up a weight. Once we get adjusted and get everyone at the right weight, I think we’ll be pretty tough down the stretch.”

The invitational was conducted all day on two mats at the middle school with the high school gym still not usable from smoke damage sustained from a minor New Year’s Eve fire in a nearby custodial closet.
