Reed City has 25 assists in win over Central Montcalm

REED CITY — Sharing was the theme Monday night. Reed City’s boys basketball team totaled 25 assists in a high-powered offensive attack and defeated Central Montcalm 81-55 in Central State Activities Association action. Ryan Willis scored 19 points while Chad Samuels added 17 points and five assists. Nolan Patterson had six assists while Kyle Wright contributed 15 points, five assists and nine rebounds. “As far as passing the ball goes, we passed the ball very well (Monday),” said Reed City coach Dean McGuire. “I was very pleased. It’s a very unselfish team. We’ve had our struggles all year. But one thing I’ve said is that they’re very unselfish.” The Hornets were led by Lane Bedford with 10 points. “They’re quick and made all their close-in shots,” said Central Montcalm coach John Kearney. “It seemed like we were a little sluggish in the beginning. The group came off the bench and got us going. We’re young. It’s a learning phase. You want to win but you also have to teach and let them know the game is 32 minutes and keep working and getting better.” Reed City improved to 9-7 overall and 9-6 in the CSAA while Central Montcalm fell to 2-13 and 2-14. The Coyotes were on the move from the opening tip with Willis scoring 10 of his points in the first quarter. The Hornets hung around and trailed only 19-3 going into the second. But the Coyotes got more balanced scoring in the second, with Samuels and Wright both scoring seven points and leading 41-24 at halftime. The hosts continued to distribute the ball well. The Hornets hit three triples in the third but Willis added seven more points and Dean Eichenburg added a triple to make it 59-39, going into the fourth. “We cleared the ball and got out and ran,” said Wright. “We did a good job of sharing the ball and passing.” Samuels netted a triple early in the fourth to help the Coyotes maintain their advantage. Reed City is home Wednesday against Holton. “We’re playing more together,” Wright said. It’s Wright’s first varsity season. “I think I’ve been playing good,” he said. “I’m out there rebounding and finding the open man.” Rebounding is a strength but Wright wants to improve on his shooting, especially outside and taking care of the ball. “We want to keep playing as a team and play together.”
