Coyotes seek to bounce back from loss to Big Rapids
REED CITY -- Coach Jesse Kailing has been at Reed City long enough to have seen buzzer-beaters go against him and go for him.
It went against him on Friday.
DeMarcus Lee sank a 3-pointer from near halfcourt to lift Big Rapids to a 56-53 CSAA Gold win on Friday.
Zach Saez had 20 points and Payton Hansen added 14.
"Hats off to Lee for hitting the half-court shot," Kailing said. "Our kids stopped playing. You have to keep playing all the way to the horn. I think our guys were little shocked and for some reason maybe thought the clock expired. Lee dribbled by two players and no one stopped him from getting to half court.
"That was puzzling. But overall, our comeback was a great comeback. The kids showed true grit and character. I'm so proud of them. The next time it might go our way."
Big Rapids avenged a 55-52 loss earlier this season at home to Reed City.
The Coyotes are 5-7 in the league and 5-12 overall. Their remaining three regular season games are on the road including Tuesday (Feb. 25) at Central Montcalm and Friday at Newaygo.
They lost to Central 64-50 and beat Newaygo 57-51 earlier this season/
"It was a close game (with Central Montcalm) until midway in the fourth quarter and kind of got away from us," Kailing said. "Central Montcalm, they stay in a 2-3 zone. We have to hit some outside shots and loosen up that zone. We also have to get stops on the defensive end of the floor."
