Coyotes get revenge on Lions

Reed City avenges its only loss of the season with 73-58 win

REED CITY — It was a night of revenge and also another winning evening at their home gym for the Reed City Coyotes. Chad Samuels scored 25 points and Kyle Wright added 24 in a 73-58 Central State Activities Association (CSAA) boys basketball victory for the Coyotes over Newaygo. The Coyotes were seeking revenge over a Newaygo team that handed Reed City its only loss so far this season last month. The Coyotes remain in a first-place CSAA tie at 9-1 and are 10-1 overall. “We played them the first time, they scored 56,” said Reed City coach Dean McGuire. “We play them the second time, they score 58. They were pretty consistent. The difference for us is we scored 51 the first time. We had (73) this time.” Reed City was up 33-24 at halftime. Dean Eichenberg swished in a triple for Reed City to open the third. Dakota Queen helped the Lions close the gap with a field goal and later a free throw, making it 43-39 at 3:11. Samuels had a big quarter with 16 points and netted a 3-point play with 44 seconds to go while Queen drew his fourth foul. Samuels had another 3-point play seconds later following a steal and assist from P.J. Jones for a 57-43 lead. It was 57-45 going into the fourth.Jones opened the fourth with a 3-point play for a 60-45 lead. Kyle Wright’s bucket at 5:40 of the fourth gave the hosts a 64-46 lead. Two Wright foul shots at 4:06 gave the Coyotes a 68-47 advantage. Samuels’ layup gave his team a 72-55 lead with 1:40 to play. The Lions opened the game shooting well and enjoying leads. Wright’s 3-point play helped the Coyotes stay in touch. Samuels got into the scoring act late in the first quarter with a triple and two free throws to put the Coyotes on top 17-16 going into the second. Reed City’s defense plagued Newaygo in the second and the Lions gradually got into foul trouble. The Lions also have a player named Kyle Wright who scored a basket in-between two field goals from the Coyotes’ Kyle Wright, who netted seven points in the second. Derek Lodholtz hit a triple early in the quarter. The Coyote defense limited the Lions to only three buckets from the floor and had the nine-point halftime lead. Newaygo’s Kyle Wright fouled out midway in the fourth quarter with 13 points. Eichenberg added 13 points for Reed City. Wright led the boards for Reed City with 14 rebounds while Eichenberg and Samuels had six apiece. Saez and Wright had four assists apiece. “Chad is such a good player, Kyle Wright is such a good player, (plus) Dean Eichenberg, Josh Saez, and Derek Lodholtz stepped into the starting lineup and did a nice job for us,” McGuire said. “P.J. Jones off the bench (Tuesday) was our energy guy. He did a fantastic job for us, causing havoc out there. T.J. Patterson came in and did a fantastic job on Queen.” Reed City is at Lakeview Friday night.
