Coyotes fall to Newaygo, defeat Morley Stanwood

REED CITY — Schuyler Smith led Reed City with 14 points, while Collin Hatfield had 11 point in a 72-69 setback to Newaygo on Friday night in Central State Activities Association Gold Division game.

Logan Straub had nine rebounds for Reed City (8-6, 4-4).

The Coyotes were at Lakeview on Tuesday and are at Grant next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Reed City’s boys basketball team allowed five first-half 3-pointers to Morley Stanwood on (Feb. 3) and trailed 34-28 at halftime.

But the visiting Coyotes shut down the Mohawks from behind the arc in the second half and broke out offensively in the fourth quarter to claim a 66-57 victory.

The Coyotes cut the deficit to one three times in the third quarter before finally regaining the lead with 6:21 to go in the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws by Mykel Dillard.

A Logan Straub layup put the Coyotes (8-5) ahead 59-50, but a Nic Huntey 3-pointer with 43 seconds remaining cut the Mohawks’ deficit to 60-57.

Andre Jones made 1 of 2 free throws three seconds later and Trent Sturgell added a pair of free throws with 30 seconds to go to put the game out of reach.

Jones had a team-high 16 points, while Sturgell scored 13 points. Straub had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Dillard scored 11 points.

Smith also had several key baskets and rebounds coming off the bench in the second half.

“It was our energy,” Reed City coach Dean McGuire of the difference in the second half.  “We didn’t have it in the first half for whatever reason. I don’t know if they were thinking it was going to be canceled or what, but they weren’t mentally prepared to play.

“(In the second half) I thought Schuyler gave us a big boost, and Straub played really well. We rebounded the ball really well in the second half and it was a team effort for us down the stretch.”
