Coyotes beat Squires to get back on track
Reed City piles up 431 yards on the ground to rebound from loss to Newaygo last week
REED CITY — It was back to winning football for the Reed City Coyotes on Friday.
Andre Jones rushed for 204 yards and four touchdowns while the Coyotes running attack compiled 431 yards in a 46-25 non-league victory against Calvin Christian.
Jon Green added 128 yards rushing for the Coyotes who improved to 3-1. The Squires fell to 1-3.
“Our kids up front did what they needed to do and owned the line of scrimmage,” Reed City coach Monty Price said.
Jones also had a touchdown on defense nullified on a penalty. He and the Coyote offense had struggled in last week’s 14-6 loss to Newaygo, which ended Reed City’s 31-game regular-season unbeaten streak.
“It was a tough battle,” Calvin Christian coach Tom Hochhalter said. “They’re a tough hard-nosed team.”
Reed City came out fired up with Jones scoring on touchdown runs of 18 and 70 yards the first two drives. The first drive covered 71 yards on 12 plays as Jones scored on a fourth-down left side sweep. Late in the quarter, with Reed City at its own 30, Jones went all the way on another left-side sweep. Nolan Patterson and Green scored the two-point conversions for a 16-0 lead.
The Coyotes at times stopped the Squires no-huddle spread offense, led by the quarterback Heeres. It appeared the Coyotes were firmly in control midway in the second quarter when Jones returned an interception 66 yards for the score. But Reed City was called for blocking in the back.
“We still have some of those nagging things that are still hurting us,” Price said. “Stupid penalties...we’re trying to fix it. It’s a struggle right now. We’ll keep plugging at it.”
With less than a minute to go in the half, Calvin Christian drove down the field 80 yards and scored on Heeres’ 8-yard touchdown pass to Tony DeWitte. The run for points failed and it was 16-6 at halftime.
The Coyotes scored three touchdown in the third quarter on Patterson’s 20-yard pass to Patrick Jobes, Logan Straub’s 1-yard run and Jones’ 33-yard scamper. Troy DeGroot had a 65-yard touchdown run in the third and also returned a fumble 44 yards in the fourth.
It was 38-23 going into the fourth. When Heeres’ pass was deflected by a Reed City defender and lateraled to Andrew Barnes for a 49-yard scoring play, it was 38-25. The Coyotes clinched it on Jones’ 24-yard run late in the game.
“We needed to get back in the win column and we did,” Price said. “The kids played hard. We had a little adversity in the second quarter. I thought minus some fluke plays in the second half, we dominated it.”
The Squires had 145 yards rushing with DeGroot gaining 145 yards. Heeres was 17-of-27 for 176 yards.
“We had some moments,” Hochhalter said. “But we were just inconsistent. We hurt ourselves on a number of plays with penalties, dropped passes or we were unable to finish drives. When you go up against a tough team like this you can’t make mistakes.”
Reed City returns to CSAA action next Friday with the Coyotes’ homecoming game against Grant.
“We got it together,” Straub said. “I thought we played well as a team. Individually I think we could have done better on defense.”
