Coyotes 2-2 at McBain Invite

REED CITY — Reed City’s volleyball team was 2-2 at the McBain Invitational on Saturday.

The Coyotes beat Manton 25-12, 25-19 and Lake City 25-11, 25-9. They lost to Ludington 25-23, 25-18 and to McBain 25-22, 25-19.

“We played very well at times,” said Reed City coach Don Patterson, noting that the two losses could have gone the other way. “Ludington and McBain are two solid teams.”

For the Coyotes, Sami Mitchell had 13 aces and 48 kills, followed by Jacolynn Mullins with 11 kills and three aces, Emma Lockhart with 11 kills and Michaela Reed with nine kills.

The Coyotes were scheduled for action on four dates this week: Tuesday at White Cloud with Lakeview, Wednesday at Central Montcalm with Hesperia and Thursday at Shelby in a quad with Big Rapids, Ludington and the host team. On Saturday, the Coyotes will be at Essexville-Garber.

Last Wednesday at Chippewa Hills, the Coyotes lost 25-17, 25-13 to Morley Stanwood and lost to Chippewa Hills 25-22, 21-25, 26-24.

For Reed City, Kalee Hensel contributed 22 digs and five kills. Lockhart had 20 digs and six kills and Sami Mitchell had 20 kills.


The Wildcats posted a Highland Conference win 25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 25-21 over Lake City on Sept. 27.

Chelsea Bengry led Evart with nine kills and eight blocks. Magdalen Hyde and Saige Nabozny had eight kills apiece. Kristen Kullman had four digs while Hyde contributed three. Kirsten Parson had five blocks.

Lyda Wetter added 12 assists for Evart.

“We’ve been working hard,” Hyde said. “We need to stay positive the whole entire match.”

The Wildcats played Saturday in the McBain Invitational.

Evart lost its matches in pool play.

“It was tough competition but we had a few (new) girls and had a new rotation,” Hyde said, noting that other regular players had some scheduling conflicts.

As for her own individual play, “I’ve been improving on my spiking this year,” Hyde added.
