Coyote wrestlers lose narrowly to Big Rapids
BIG RAPIDS - Reed City's wrestling team has been battling illnesses and injuries in recent weeks, and struggled with an 0-2 record on Wednesday in a pair of Central State Activities Association matches.
The Coyotes lost 36-35 to big Rapids. Earlier this season at the Big Rapids Invitational, the Coyotes had beaten Big Rapids by a point.
Bryson Hughes and Austin Fowler won for the Coyotes over Tri County. Winners for Reed City against Big Rapids included Hughes, Fowler, Mason Johnson and Aaron Boucher.
Johnson got a pin at 125 to end the match but Reed City had been down by seven points going into the final division.
"We hoped to come in and wrestle a little better than we did," Steig said. "We didn't wrestle real well for sure. I talked to the kids afterwards and said we have to go the practice room and pick up our intensity. But we've been pretty sick as a team for a couple of weeks. We have to get back to the program. We were down to the end."
Reed City has a team tournament on Feb. 1. Other teams will be Pine River Mio, Lake City, Evart and Farwell.
Evart was in Mancelona Wednesday night for a double dual. In the first dual Evart saw Roscommon and won 42-36 with Sam Bailey bumping up to 171 pounds to get a pin for the team win.
"In the second match, we saw Mancelona and lost 42-36," Evart coach Ben Bryant said. "Reese Ransom, Cole Hopkins, Sam Bailey, Darren Gostlin and Nick Robinson, all went 2-0."
