Coyote baseball falls to Cadillac; sofball drops game to Belding

COMSTOCK PARK — The Reed City Coyotes just couldn’t get the bats going Monday night in a non-league baseball doubleheader, losing 3-1 and 11-1.

The games were played at Fifth Third Park, home of the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Ryan Willis was the losing pitcher in the first game. Mike Schneidt had a hit and stole a base. Mike Barton and Ricky Droke also had hits.

The second game went only five innings.

Codie Strach was the losing pitcher. Schneidt had a hit and scored a run. Strach had two hits and an RBI.

“We struggled at the plate,” said Coyote coach Scott Shankel. “It was our third (doubleheader) in four days. They’ve played a lot of baseball lately. They didn’t seem ready to play tonight.”

The Coyotes are at the Cadillac Tournament on Saturday.

Between Tuesday and Saturday, “we’ll have time to relax and take it easy,” Shankel said.

Saturday, Reed City was 1-1 at the Sanford Meridian Invitational. The Coyotes lost to Unionville-Sebewaing 5-4 in the first game. Dylan Kichak took the pitching loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and fanning 10. Rocky Droke had two hits, Glen Ryder a hit and RBI and Mike Schneidt a hit.

Shawn Woodside was the winning pitcher against Arthur Hill, allowing two earned runs on six hits and fanning out eight. Schneidt had two hits and an RBI, Kichak a hit and RBI and Ryder a hit, plus Trevor Mund a hit and RBI.

On Friday, the Coyotes swept White Cloud on the road 9-6 and 14-13 in CSAA action. Droke was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out five batters.

The Coyotes trailed 6-2 in the opener before Kichak crushed a grand slam homer. He had three hits and five RBIs for the contest. Mund and Codie Strach had two hits apiece.

Ryan Willis was the winning pitcher in the second game, striking out eight batters. Eric Grannis, Strach and Josh Saez had two hits for RC. Glen Ryder and Mike Barton had two RBIs.

Reed City is 12-13 and 9-3 in the CSAA (prior to Tuesday action).

SOFTBALL

Reed City’s softball team lost to Belding 4-1 at the Belding Invitational on Saturday. Courtney Morgan gave up eight hits and four runs. Amanda Steig had two hits while Sydney Arnold, Morgan, Sam McDonald and Skiler Brigham had one hit apiece.

Vestaburg defeated Reed City in the second game 5-1. McDonald went six innings and was the losing pitcher. She allowed eight hits. Amanda Steig and Sydney Arnold had hits for the Coyotes.

Reed City is 19-5.

On Friday, Reed city swept White Cloud on the road in CSAA action 14-2, 12-1.

Amanda Steig won the first game as pitcher, allowing two walks and three hits and two runs in six innings while fanning 10 batters. Steig, Ally Stieg, Emma Lockhart, Sydney Arnold, Riley Lawson, Sam McDonald, Cerria Engstrom and Heather Huss had two hits each for RC. Morgan and Taylor Steig had one hit each.

Amanda Steig also picked up the win in the second game, going four innings and allowing five hits and no walks while fanning three. Morgan pitched the last inning, allowing a walk while notching three strikeouts.

Steig had two hits including a home run. Ally Stieg, Lockhart, Morgan, Taylor Steig and Huss had two hits each.
