VanOrders providing Wildcats with boosts on both ends of floor

EVART — The VanOrder cousins continue to get the job done for the Evart boys basketball team.

Senior Jarek VanOrder and his cousin, Devon VanOrder, have been two of Evart’s top players in their 3-1 start to the season.

Jarek is in his third varsity season and has been among the top scorers and rebounders for the Wildcats.

“It’s good, we’ve gotten a good start,” he said. “We’re playing good together and figuring everything out.”

VanOrder said his team’s best game was the 66-36 season opener against Farwell.

“I think I’m starting to come into it,” he said. “We’re moving the ball and the offense is really playing to our strength.”

Jarek said his goal remains the same from previous seasons: score and get rebounds, not to mention playing hard defense.

“I think I’ve improved so I should have my best year,” he said, adding that he’s working on improving his shooting, especially the outside, mid-range jump shots.

The key to winning upcoming games, VanOrder said, “will be to keep playing hard defense, out-work the other team and run our offense well.”

The Wildcats “can be the hardest working team on the court every night, no matter who we play,” VanOrder said. “We want to outwork and be more physical than the teams we’re going to play.”

Devon VanOrder is a junior his second varsity season. Last season, “I felt I contributed the way the coaches wanted,” he said, adding that with a new coach, Kris Morgan, “we’ve adjusted really good.”

Devon has been focusing on defense and trying to match up against key players from the opposition inside.

“We’re playing good,” VanOrder said. “I think we’ll be good. We’ll pull off surprises. There’s a lot of underestimation of us.”

To get a win every night he and his teammate are on the court, “we need to play at our level and not the other teams,” VanOrder added.
