Couples league remains popular at Spring Valley
REED CITY – It continues to be a popular league at Spring Valley Golf Course.
The Friday Couples League tees off late afternoon every Friday night from now until Sept. 21. Cathy Sleger is again serving as league secretary.
“We had 32 couples last week,” Sleger said. “We're getting more and more every year. It's a fun league. You get together.”
Action began in April. Each league night features nine holes. Couples come from all over with most coming from Reed City and Evart. Steve Sleger, her husband, provides his help. It's her third year as secretary, keeping the scores and averages. Prizes are awarded for various accomplishments.
“We have a good show of people so they must like it,” Sleger said. “Everybody is welcomed. You don't have to show up every week.”
There are various ranges of abilities, Sleger noted. The Scotish doubles format is used.
“You both hit off the tee then you hit every other shot,” she said. “We count putts and we have a pot for putts.”
Sleger also plays in the Monday night women's league. “You come and play and they match you up with anybody,” Sleger said. “But you play for yourself.”
Her husband is in the Thursday Men's League while they both play in the Sunday scramble, which consists of foursomes.
“You don't know who you're golfing with every week,” Sleger said.
