REED CITY — Ralph McKenna of Cedar Springs have a philosophy. If you’re gong to have a second home, have it near a golf course.

McKenna has a cabin and 160 acres in the Eight Mile and 170th Avenue area in Osceola County not too far from Spring Valley Golf Course. Friday was the first time this year he’s played the course.

“I think it’s very well maintained and the folks do a nice job here,” he said, adding that he’s played on and off at the course for 14 years.

They also play the Briar by Mesick.

“I think the back nine has some rustic looks to it and narrow fairways that remind me of Whitefish Lake Course (In Pierson),” McKenna said. “They do a nice job of maintaining it. It was fun.”McKenna shot a 52 and 54 on Friday and considers himself a duffer.

“We also have a place in Florida so we’re playing down there,” he said.

His wife, Faith, was with him also, playing 18 holes, along, with Terry and Elaine Howes, also of Cedar Springs.
