Cornelius key runner for Reed City cross country team

REED CITY — McKenzie Cornelius is among the key runners back for a Reed City girls cross country team which will be fielding a full squad this fall.

Cornelius, a senior, has been running cross since the seventh grade.

Her best time has been a 21:27 during her freshman year. But she hasn’t been near that since.

Staying healthy, Cornelius said, will be critical for her to regain the success from her freshman year.

“As a sophomore, I had a stress fracture,” she said. “Last year, I had shin splints. We’re going to try. I have been running all summer.”

During a 3.1-mile race, Cornelius’s fastest part has been her first mile. But she’s working to improve on the third mile.

“We hope to do well,” Cornelius said of her team, which runs Sept. 8 at Tri County.
