Conklin set to have strong season for Evart

EVART – Deanna Conklin has been a familiar face in Evart athletics the past three seasons, and as a senior for the volleyball squad, she’s hoping 2020 will be her best fall campaign.

It’s her third varsity season.

“Things went OK last year,” she said. “My setting improved a lot.”

Conklin will be a setter again this season. She’s expecting this to be among the best teams Evart has had in awhile.

The key to being an effective setter, Conklin said, “is talking to your teammates, and knowing who is hitting and where they want the ball.”

She has been a setter all of her high school years but was not one in middle school volleyball. It was the coach’s idea.

“I was a little hesitating and scared because it was my freshman year,” Conklin admitted, adding she’s more comfortable, relaxed and confident with the position.

“I think I’m decent at it and am still working at it,” Conklin said. “Sometimes, it doesn’t go my way.”

Conklin also plays softball but because of COVID, she didn’t have a spring season with Evart. But she has still been keeping busy practicing throughout the summer.

The season started with outdoor practices on Aug. 12 but eventually things went indoors.

“I think we’ll go really far,” Conklin said. “I think our team is really good. We talk to each other. We keep the energy up.”
