Reed City, Evart, Pine River wrestlers compete in weekend tournaments

SOUTH HAVEN — Reed City placed fifth in a 10-team South Haven Wrestling Invitational on Saturday. 

Reed City was 3-2 on the day with wins over Coloma 66-12, South Haven 48-33 and Ravenna 54-24. Losses were to Wayland 77-6 and Niles 48-36.

Bryson Hughes was 5-0 at 171, bringing  his season record 12-0. Elijah Lentz was 4-1 at 130. Going 3-2 were Wyatt Spalo (285), Zach Bennett (119), Izaiah Lentz (135), Logan Kindig was 3-0 (130), Myles McCarthy was 3-1 at 140. Wrestlers with two wins were Noah Morgan, Chad Landis and Jaxson Benson. With one win each was Hunter Fagon-Moyer, Braedon Ghent, Logan Cutler, Autumn Thompson, Trevor Burgess and Dannica Bregg. 

Reed City’s next match will be on Dec. 30 in the first 12-team Reed City Holiday Rumble with teams from all around the state coming. Wrestling will start at 9 a.m. in both the middle school and high school gyms.

Also on Saturday, the girls wrestling team had its first match at the Kent County Championships and Caitlin Chiger placed second, going 2-1.

Evart at Hart

Evart was at the Hart at the Mark Bosse individual tournament. Cole Hopkins showed well and took first place at 171 lbs going 4-0 on the day. Ethan Conk wrestled his way to a fourth-place finish and Sam Bailey recovered well after an early loss and took fifth going 4-1 for the day. Other wrestlers having strong showings for Evart were Cole Staats and Alex Burhans.

Evart started its conference schedule on Tuesday in Kingsley vs. Manton and Frankfort.

Pine River at Marquette

The Bucks were at the Marquette challenge this weekend and placed ninth in a very strong field. Ryder Holmes led the team with a third-place finish at 140 pounc. Seth Duncan had a strong day at 125 pounds, finishing fifth. Phil Rigling (152), Wyatt Underhill (145), and Cayden Mys (160) were all sixth.
