Charles looking to have strong season at libero for Pine River

LEROY—  Tailor Charles is in her third varsity season for Pine River’s volleyball team and is looking for this year to be her best.

“I think this year, we have a lot going for us,” she said. “We can go far, I think.”

Charles came up to the varsity as a sophomore and immediately enjoyed success.

“It was intimidating at first,” she said. “It got better and better. I’ve gotten better each year.”

Charles has been playing libero. That’s been her position the the last two seasons. Being a strong passer and a good communicator is critical at that position, she indicated, adding that as a senior, it’s been easier for her to master the position.

“My serving has gotten better,” she said.

Pine River plays home Thursday against Reed City.

“We’re kind of young but we all mesh together and get along good,” Charles said. “We started out kind of rough at Traverse City. In our (next) tournament at Kingsley, we played really good. We played good defense and offense, and we talked a lot. (We need to keep) talking and moving our feet.”

Serving has been a role for Charles this season.

“I never really served in the past,” she said. “It takes a lot of focus.”
