CSAA honors two Reed City players
REED CITY — Reed City has two boys basketball players on the all-Central State Activities Association Gold Division team announced recently.
Senior Cody Kailing was on the first team and junior Zac Saez on the honorable mention list.
Cody Kailing led Reed City in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals with 12 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and 35 steals.
Zac Saez averaged nine points, three rebounds and three assists per game plus 31 steals.
“He handled the ball well,” Reed City coach JJ Eads said.
Anthony Pelton was at 9.5 points and 7.0 rebounds, and shot 48 percent from the floor.
Key graduates for the Coyotes are Kailing, Anthony Pelton, Jackson Price, Philip Jones-Price, Preston Johnson, Stephen Shewan, Brandon Wirth, Josh Mund and Brandon Major.
Saez and Payton Hansen are key returning players.
Reed City was 13-9 overall and 9-5 in the league for third place.
“We had a roller coaster of a season, good start, rough second half until end of the season and played well last few games,” Eads said. “We had high expectations but only played five games with the full roster due to injuries and other circumstances. We were ready to compete for a district title at end of the season and ran into some bad luck vs Ludington.”
Two major wins handing Fremont its only CSAA loss of the team, beating a solid Newaygo team on senior night and defeating Big Rapids in the district semifinal.
“Started 9-2, hit a rough patch for a variety of reasons after that, probably had a couple losses we shouldn’t have, and always competed.”
As for next year, “we’re losing a lot of talent and depth and will need younger kids to step up,” Eads said. “Seniors were key to having winning seasons the past two years. We came in together in a tough spot a couple years ago and were able to turn the program back into a winner.”
