LEROY -- Pine River will be starting its wrestling season this week with hopes of having another championship contending team.

Tim Jones is back for another season as coach. The team has its first home match Dec. 18 with Mancelona.

The Highland Conference is also slated to have wrestling as a league championship sport this season.

The Bucks have talented senior wrestlers with Maverick Holmes (130), Thomas Hooker (145), Jordan Koetje (130), Trevor Root (125) and Austen Wuesten (160).

Promising juniors are Dylan Fauble (112), Elijah Carper (189), Andrew Stevens (145), Christian Charles (145) and Zack Lemmon (152).

The Bucks are high on sophomore wrestlers such as Landyn Cool (125), Dillon Blood (189), Seth Duncan (119), Cam Hemboldt (160), Ben Lockhart (160), Caden Jys (135), Phil Rigling (145) Matt Trieber (119), Wyatt Underhill (130). Hunter Varney (189), Job Flores (160), Taiju Ichizono (125), Jazmine Draper (103) and Kyle Haden (285). Freshmen are Jolynn Bode (119), Jordan Nelson (103) and Mike Viurqic (285).

Tragedy struck the program last month in an automobile accident involving three wrestlers. Tim Rizor lost his life in that accident. The status of Brock Nelson and Creed Watson for the wrestling program is still unknown.
