Bucks even record heading into postseason

LEROY — Pine River’s boys basketball team finished the regular season at a 10-10 but would like to go undefeated in the postseason for a long time.

The Bucks finished the Highland Conference season at 6-8. Lincoln Erickson scored 23 points and Austin Marine had 13 points for the Bucks.

Last week on March 1, they won 60-54 at Manton and lost in the regular-season finale March 3 at McBain 70-57.

McBain ended the regular season at 18-2.

“We played really well,” said Pine River coach Scott Benson. “We went up on them by 13 and they stiffened up their defense on us and they ended up winning by 13. That’s not indicative of the game. Our kids played really well. They got a lot of support from the bench where we didn’t.”

Marine had 25 points while Erickson had 19, including 13 in the first two quarters.

McBain put nine players into the scoring column.

“They shot the lights out in the second half,” Benson said. “We played good defense. They just everything they threw up. They started getting penetration from their point guard.”

Pine River plays at McBain again Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m. against the host school in Class C district semifinal action.

“We’re working on some things and may make different switch-ups on the men we’re guarding,” Benson said.

Against Manton, “there were over 64 free throws, over 50 fouls were called,” Benson said. “That helped Manton out to their benefit. We weren’t ready to play and couldn’t hang onto the ball. But we won.”

Erickson had 11 rebounds against Manton and 10 against McBain.

A 10-10 record, “is what I figured we’d go at,” Benson said. “We lost six games in the last seconds. You take that away and we could easily have been 13-1 in the conference. But it happens.”
