EVART — It was a busy winter of basketball for Abby Brown of Evart.

Brown was busy watching her dad, Larry, coach the Evart varsity girls team during the winter. She also participated in the Elks Hoops Shoot during the winter and took second in Grand Rapids Saturday during state competition.

Brown, the Big Rapids Elks lodge winner, took the 10-11-year-old title on Jan. 26 in the Northwest District Hoop Shoot at Mona Shores High School in Clare where lodge winners from Holland to Traverse City competed.

That accomplishment put Brown in the state competition.

Brown a fifth grader, made 14 free throws of 25 attempts in the state competition. She said the winner made 17 shots.

Despite taking second, Brown said she was disappointed she didn’t come in first. But Brown, who said she shoots a lot of free throws, said she still considers herself to be a good shooter from the foul line.
