Boys basketball teams continue preseason practices

REED CITY — Boys basketball teams are in their second week of preseason action with a focus on various scrimmages with their seasons set to begin the second week in December.

The Coyotes have a

non-league game at home with Cadillac Dec. 10 to start the season and then open the Central State Activities Association season at Morley Stanwood Dec. 17.

“We’re seeing how we’re coming together as a team as far as the flow on offense and communication on defense,” Reed City coach Dean McGuire said, “and just being competitive against somebody besides ourselves. We’re going against ourselves in practice every day.”

Most of McGuire’s players are coming off a football season that ended earlier this month.

“Football shape and basketball shape are definitely two different things for sure,” McGuire said. “We’re not where we want to be yet as far as conditioning.”

Evart opens at home Dec. 10 with Farwell and has its Highland Conference opener Dec. 17 with McBain Northern Michigan Christian. Coach Kris Morgan indicated his team might have a scrimmage sometime next week.

“We did a lot of conditioning (last week) to see who wants to be there and who’s ready to work,” Morgan said.

“This week, we’ll focus more on skills and getting into different wrinkles with our offense and work on defense a little more.”

Bucks coach Brian Goodenow said he team spent a few days last week focusing on conditioning.

The Bucks are home Dec. 10 against Harrison in the season opener.

“This coming week, we’ll work on plays and get the incoming guys up to speed,” Goodenow said. “Hopefully, this will be a productive week.”
