Big Rapids soccer team blanks Reed City

BIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids soccer teams started off the first of three games in a row with a 4-0 Central State Activities Association soccer win over Reed City at Ferris State’s soccer fields.

The Cardinals improved to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the CSAA while Reed City fell to 5-4-2 and 3-3-1.

On Thursday, Big Rapids plays at Tri County against a team 4-0 in the league. On Friday, Newaygo, 4-0-2, comes to Big Rapids.

Julia Waltz scored two goals and Ariana Costie and Katie Williams had once goal apiece.

“We came out flat with not a whole lot of intensity,” Big Rapids coach Curt Ray said. “We’ve been off. It was kind of an ugly first half. We talked to them at halftime. The second half, I thought they played better.”

Emma Balahoski was Big Rapids keeper the first half and Geralynn McAdams the second half.

It was senior night for Costie and Emily Morrone.

“We started off a little rough but we progressively got better,” Costie said. “We weren’t playing up to our potential. We weren’t stepping up to the ball and were coming off slow. Coming off two weeks (of no soccer) it’s hard to jump right in. I’m hoping we’ll be fine.”

“The first half, our intensity and effort wasn’t there,” Morrone said. “Once we started to clean things up, it got better.”

Reed City now gets ready for the conference tournament next week.

“It’s our usual game against Big Rapids,” Paige Lofquist said. “I think we did pretty good. They just happen to be a better team.”

“It was a good hard game,” Reed City coach Andrea Pollaski said. “We actually had our forwards did a good job pushing the ball up, working hard and trying to get it in the goal.”
