BIG RAPIDS -- It was Big Rapids over Reed City 5-0 in the opening round of the Central State Activities Association Tournament on Monday.

Big Rapids also beat Reed City 8-2 on Wednesday in a regular-season game.

"We wanted to come out and control play," Big Rapids coach Justin Fox said. "Reed City was playing some pretty stout defense and they were organized. It was frustrating, but hats off to (Reed City) for playing pretty well."

Big Rapids sophomore Aden Herron kicked off a slew of scoring for the Cardinals with his first of two goals, receiving a through pass in the open field from fellow sophomore Nick Somsel just before the halfway point of the first half.

Somsel set up another goal with 5:25 remaining before halftime. This time the recipient was senior Thomas Crandell and now the Cardinals a cushion after the first 40 minutes were over.

Emerging quickly out the gate in the second half was senior Jonah Hengesbach, who deposited Big Rapids' third goal of the night less than 10 minutes removed from the half.

Not long after this, Herron scored again and the Cardinals looked to be in control of their own destiny.

Fox emphasized the need for his defense to shut down Reed City senior Ethan Maddox.

Reed City coach Christopher Maddox said he could see the Coyote defense starting to gel more and more later in the game.

"Any time we have a zero up there (on the scoreboard) for the guest, I'm happy," Fox said.

BR has four home wins this season.

Big Rapids will travel to play Fremont in the next round of CSAA Tournament action.

The Coyotes' record now stands at 4-12-1.
