EVART — Evart junior Austin Hamilton is showing signs of being an all-state candidate for cross country this season.

He had a challenging meet at home on Sept. 23 when temperatures were in the 80s. He clocked an 18:06 for third place. But a week later, under cooler temperatures at the Carson City-Crystal Don Baese Invitational, he had his personal record of 16:45.4 in his division.

As a sophomore, Hamilton earned all-state honors by placing 18th in 16:59.2. It was his PR prior to the Baese meet. When he was a freshman, his season’s best was a 17:56.9.

“For being as hot as it was, I think I ran pretty well,” he said.

Hamilton would like to get his time down to 16:30.

“I need a good day, I need it to be cool,” he said.

Hamilton indicated the strength to his race has been the first and third mile. The second mile has been a weakness.

The Wildcats are minus some key runners from last year, but Hamilton is still optimistic.

“I think we can make it to state as a team this year,” he said. “We have plenty of work to do. This will be my best year so far, but I hope to be better next year.”
