Area hunter shoots 10-pointer

PARIS — It was a fun bow season for Lucas Baumgardner, 36, of Paris.

Baumgardner was hunting on Oct. 21 around 6:45 p.m. when he used his crossbow to shoot a 10-point buck with 19 3/4-inch rack span.

He got it about two miles west of Reed City.

“This is my second buck this year,” he said. “My first one was an 8-point, 18-inch spread.”

Baumgardner realized the 10-point buck was out there.

“He actually came in one time pretty close and was within five yards of giving me a shot,” Baumgardner said. “He went back into the corn and turned like he was going away. He took off walking and disappeared into the swamp. Five minutes later, some does come out from the swamp and he comes walking back out. All I could see was horns.

“I hit my grunt one time. He turned and came from about 100 yards away, stopped about 40 yards away. I shot him in the neck and he dropped right where he was standing.”

It’s the 10th deer in Baumgardner’s lifetime.

“The two I got this year are by far the best two bucks I’ve ever got,” he said. “A couple of years ago, I went to South Dakota with a couple of buddies and shot a pretty decent  8-point. Two Michigan bucks this year tops it all.

“There’s a lot of nice bucks out there. I’m done for the year. I have a kid and dad that want to do some hunting out of my spot. We’ll see what happens. There’s a lot of bucks out there still running.”
