Another Allen is major key for Reed City runners

Coyotes looking forward to Aaron Allen's next three years

REED CITY – The brotherly combination of Ryan and Aaron Allen of Reed City’s cross country team has the future of the Coyote program looking excessively bright.

Most of the runners return from a team, which placed sixth at state this season. Returnees include Ryan Allen, a junior, who was 31st at the finals and missed All-State by one place, and Aaron, a freshman, who was usually among the top five RC runners.

Aaron Allen played a key role in Reed City’s drive to a Central State Activities Association title and sixth-place state finish. He placed 28th at regionals with a personal record of 18:09.7 and was 170th at the state meet.

He wound up being honorable mention all-conference.

“Freshmen Aaron Allen and Paul Saladin both shared time as the No. 5 with Aaron being the anchor there at the end of the season,” Rich Saladin said. “Aaron has steadily improved all year.  He has been a major factor as our No. 5 runner and helping to clinch the CSAA championship and be second at Regionals. He was peaking at the right time and was taking ownership of his place on the team.”

“It went really good,” Aaron Allen said late in the season. “I was really proud of what the team was able to accomplish. I’m very proud of myself for having achieved some of my goals.

“I’ve surpassed my goals for this year. I put on quite a few miles (during the offseason) although maybe not as much as I should have.”

He was able to adjust to the longer distance of high school running with no problem.

“The first couple of races were a little bit rough but once I got a couple of races in, I knew what was going on,” Allen said. His goal was to break 18:45 and he accomplished it.

“I have a good start and try to pass people in the center,” Allen said.

He’s also involved in track and field and trap shooting, but says cross country is his favorite.
