CLARE – It went into double overtime on Monday with the visiting Reed City Coyotes prevailing for a 53-46 nonleague victory over Clare.

Reed City trailed 11-4 after the first quarter and 14-11 at halftime. Reed City trailed 27-17 after three quarter. But it was 32-32 after the fourth quarter and 39-39 after the first overtime.

Kyleigh Weck led the Coyotes with 16 points while Morgan Hammond had 13, Carly Carlson 10 and Molly Bowman and Christian Malackanich had seven points apiece.

“It was a slow first half,” Reed City coach Tim Beilfuss said. “You’re talking about a 14-11 score. We got down by 11 in the third. The kids did a great job of fighting back after getting down by double digits. In the last five minutes of the game they made a charge. With a minute to go in the game, we were able to tie it up.

“They made free throws in overtime. They learned how to win tonight. I’m really proud of that. Everybody on our team contributed. Now we can get our legs underneath us and rest and have a couple of days off before we play again on Friday. We have a couple of kids banged up. We need to get healthy at this point. But we figured out how to win. That’s the biggest thing we got from this game. Clare is not an easy place to go to. They have a good team and are very aggressive. The kids rose to the challenge in the fourth quarter.”

Reed City is 3-8 and is home on Friday for a conference game with Lakeview. RC is 1-2 on Friday.
