Amanda Steig named to all-CSAA first team

REED CITY — Reed City’s girls softball team finished fifth in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) race this season at 8-8 and had several standouts including Amanda Steig who picked up honors on the first team.

Sam McDonald and Courtney Morgan were on the second team for Reed City.

Sydni Arnold was on the honorable mention list for the Coyotes.

Steig was a junior catcher/first baseman. She scored 35 runs and had 44 hits with nine doubles and two triples and one home run, plus 18 RBIs. Steig also had 29 stolen bases and batted .444 with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging percentage of .606. She committed no errors.

Steig threw out 14 runners attempting to steal.

“Amanda is our leadoff hitter and is kind of the one that gets our team going,” Steig said. “She was voted by her teammates as team captain. She has exceptional speed and broke her own school record which was 26 stolen bases. She had 29.

“Offensively she stepped up her game a lot. She raised her batting from . 308 last year to .444 this year.”

Morgan, a junior pitcher, scored 26 runs and had 41 hits with 11 double, three triples, two home runs, 29 RBIs, plus seven stolen bases with a .432 batting average and on base percentage of .500. Her slugging percentage was .674. Her fielding average was .908.

“Courtney was our workhorse, she carried the team pitching,” Steig said. “Sam McDonald, our other pitcher, had surgery. So Courtney earlier in the season was our workhorse.”

Morgan’s pitching record was 11-8 in 119 innings of work. She fanned 96 batters and walked 69 and had an ERA of 3.70.

McDonald scored 25 runs and had 47 hits, plus 109 doubles, six triples and one home run for the Coyotes, plus 32 RBIs. She batted .511 and had a .579 on-base percentage. Her slugging percentage was .783. Her fielding percentage was .895. McDonald, a junior, played third base and pitched. As a pitcher, she was 5-5. She fanned 63 batters and walked 27. Her ERA was 3.50.

Arnold, a junior outfielder, had 15 runs scored with 32 hits, seven doubles, one triple, 20 RBIs and 13 sacrifices. She batted .405 and her on base percentage was .449 and slugging percentage was .519. Her fielding average was .942.

“She only had two errors on the year,” Roger Steig said.
