LEROY — A new team with a lot of familiar faces dominate the Local Area Teams League this season.

The Alumni team, consisting of former players from Reed City and Pine River, had a squad in the league and lost only one game. The team split a doubleheader with Reed City.

Christie Nelson of Pine River and Taylor Steig of Reed City were two local former players who organized the team.

“Everything went very well, better than I expected,” Nelson said. “We pulled people together.”

Pitchers included Jules Griffin of Reed City, plus Miranda Nelson and Rachel (Ruppert) Bowman of Pine River.

Various alums would come at different times. LAT League doubleheader were played Wednesday nights during a six-week stretch.

“Usually we had enough players,” Nelson said. “A lot of them play a lot of slo-pitch. But for fast-pitch, for a lot of them it was the first time since high school. A lot of girls got excited about it. We were all surprised at how well we could still play.”

A lot of other players attend college and were home for the summer.

Nelson indicated three might be an alumni team in the LAT League again next year.

“We’re already talking about it. A lot of girls indicated they would like to keep this going,” she said. “I think it’s something we’ll do next year for sure.”
