LEROY — Pine River’s girls basketball team stormed to the Highland Conference title with an undefeated record and five girls that made the all-league team announced recently were heavily responsible for that accomplishment.

Jamie Justin, Kassy Nelson, Cayman Gatt and Devyn Powell were on the first team while Haley Raymond earned honorable mention status.

Justin also earned honorable mention All-State status from the Associated Press in Class C. She averaged 17.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game as a senior.

“I thought Jamie was the best player in our area,” said Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert. “I thought she was the most consistent.”

Ruppert added that because Pine River defeated many teams by decisive margins, Justin’s playing time was frequently limited in the second half and her overall numbers weren’t higher than they could have been.

Nelson, a sophomore, averaged 12 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game.

”I thought Kassy improved a lot from last year,” Ruppert said. “She was one of the better rebounders we had.”

Powell, a senior, was at 7.5 points and 3.2 boards, plus 2.3 steals a game.

“Probalby one of the fastest girls on the basketball court, she was a good defender,” Ruppert said.

Gatt, a senior, averaged 6.9 points, three rebounds and 2.5 steals a game.

“Cayman improved her game all-around,  especially scoring-wise this year.” Ruppert said.

Raymond, a senior, was at 4.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals a game.
