Pioneer photo/John RaffelEVART – Marcel White scored 30 points earlier this season in an Evart boys basketball game as a major season highlight for the Wildcat senior.
He’s hoping for a few more of those before calling it a career.
The 30 points came in a 59-47 win over Roscommon in early January.
“Marcel really took the team on his back tonight,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said after the game. “He had been struggling a little bit this year with his shot. We met with him over break and talked about what he did last year and how he could go back to that and go back to the fundamentals a little bit.
“We wanted him to remember what he did last year and take it into this year. He really responded with the 30 points, which is huge.”
It was a career high for White, who was only averaging 5.4 points a game in the first five contests.
“We reminded what works for him and he responded,” Morgan said. “He’s been working hard over break. It showed up tonight.”
White remembers the game well.
“My teammates had a lot of steals for me,” White recalled. I got a lot of fast breaks. They opened up some opportunities and I took them.”
White indicated many of his teammates are also capable of having such a night.
He only had one 3-pointer during the 30-point night. But there were 11 layups from the Wildcat player who loves driving to the basket.
It’s his third varsity season but it’s tough to say right now if it’s been his best campaign.
“I need to hit my free throws, have confidence and knock down my threes,” he said.
Evart was 7-7 going into action at Pine River on Friday night.
“Sometimes, we seem to have one bad quarter in a game and it costs us,” he said. “We need to have four good quarters instead of three and play hard the whole game.”
