Reed City man to be charged for stabbing at Gypsy Nickel
BIG RAPIDS — A Reed City man is expected to be arraigned today after stabbing someone at the Gypsy Nickel Lounge on Friday.
Witnesses told police Simon Shelton, 22, was at the bar, located at 228 Baldwin Street, near closing time. He was extremely intoxicated, to the point that bar staff stopped serving him, said Big Rapids Department of Public Safety Det. Brian Miller.
“After he had taken care of his tab, he was hanging around being obnoxious, according to witnesses,” Miller said. “One of the staff members escorted him out, and a couple of that staff member’s friends followed them out because of (Shelton’s) behavior.”
It’s unknown what occurred in the parking lot after Shelton was taken outside, but Shelton pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the friends of that bar employee in the abdomen. The victim managed to wrestle Shelton to the ground, at which point another person grabbed his knife and gave it to the bar employee. They were able to hold him until police arrived.
Shelton is held in Mecosta County Jail on a charge of felonious assault. He was not arraigned on Friday; however, a warrant was secured to keep him in custody until he can be arraigned today.
The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital in Grand Rapids with an injury to his liver, Miller said. His condition is unknown at this time.
