Brown scheduled to be in court Thursday

REED CITY — Janet Brown is scheduled for a preliminary examination at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Osceola County’s 77th District Court.

At a hearing on June 6 in Osceola County’s 77th District Court, Judge Susan Grant dismissed the case without prejudice because investigators were unable to locate the victim to testify. Michigan State Police Troopers recently located the victim in the case and, therefore, had grounds to re-arrest Brown.

Brown was charged on Aug. 26 with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. She was released on a $20,000 bond, as she awaits her upcoming hearings. Each third-degree CSC charge carries a potential 15-year sentence. Fourth degree CSC is a two-year high court misdemeanor, according to court documents.

Brown was a teacher at Ashmun School at Eagle Village in Hersey, an adjudicated youth facility for troubled teens. Ashmun School, a separate entity from Eagle Village, is run by the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District.

In November, Brown was placed on unpaid leave from the MOISD after administrators confiscated a 16-year-old male student’s phone and discovered inappropriate communication between him and Brown. The investigation was turned over to Michigan State Police on Nov. 20, which led to previous charges against Brown.
