Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, a democrat from Texas, was immediately sworn into office and is the only president sworn into their position outside of the U.S. Capital.
Here are some newspaper front pages from the day the country stopped and mourned

The Telegraph — Alton, Illinois

The Edwardsville Intelligencer — Edwardsville, Illinois

The Jacksonville Daily Journal — Jacksonville, Illinois
