OSCEOLA COUNTY \u2014 The Reed City Area District Library and Lincoln Township Fire Department were awarded\u00a0grants from the Great Lakes Energy People Fund, according to a news release from the organization. The Reed City Area District Library was awarded a $2,000 grant that will help fund outdoor games and seating. \u201cDuring the summer we have a big summer reading program open to kids of all ages and there are adult activities as well, and when the weather is nice, we do our events outside,\u201d library director Melissa Rohen said. \u201cWe will be using this grant to provide some interactive and engaging table games and some larger yard games, as well as to get some newer picnic tables for our patrons to use.\u201d She added the grant is really important because the added board games and yard games will allow them to engage with patrons on another level. \u201cThis will allow us to engage a wider array of patrons, and get them engaged and having fun,\u201d she said. \u201cHopefully they will check out some books, but we are not just a book depository. We are also here to support our community members engaging with each other, as well.\u201d The Lincoln Township Fire Department, in Reed City, received a $2,400 grant award that will help fund firefighter safety communication equipment. Lincoln Township Fire Department Chief David Beldon said the grant request was for hand held radios for fire ground use. \u201cOur project budget is $4,800 and we received $2,400 from Great Lakes Energy People Fund,\u201d Beldon said. \u201cWe do have some funding from another source, but without this funding we would be stuck. We will be able to buy six handheld radios, changer units and handheld microphones with this funding. Without the grant, we would not have been able to purchase the equipment.\u201d He added the grant is very important in allowing them to improve firefighter safety on fire and other emergency scenes. \u201cFirefighters will be able to communicate with each other at emergency scenes and during traffic control, and at fire scenes they will be able to communicate inside and around the fire grounds,\u201d he said. \u201cThis will help ensure the firefighters safety.\u201d Also receiving awards were the Angels of Action in Big Rapids, Mid-Michigan Honor Flights, Inc., in Mecosta, the Lake County Habitat for Humanity and the Bread of Life Food Pantry in Baldwin. The Great Lakes Energy People Fund has awarded more than $144,000 to nonprofit organizations across the cooperative\u2019s 26-county service are for 2022, according to the news release. Funding for the Great Lakes Energy People Fund program comes from members of the electric cooperative who agree to have their monthly bills rounded up to the next whole dollar.\u00a0 Members are encouraged to enroll in the People Fund online at gtlakes.com or by contacting Great Lakes Energy\u2019s office. Cooperative members also can increase their contributions to the People Fund through People Fund PLUS, which allows members to choose an amount, in addition to the monthly bill round-up, to contribute to the program. Grants are awarded twice each year by three independent regional boards representing the cooperative\u2019s north, central, and south regions. The program is accepting applications from local nonprofit organizations for the final 2022 grant cycle. The deadline for letters of intent is Oct. 1, with grant applications due by Oct. 15.
