GRAND RAPIDS\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Jimmie V. Spence, 81, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at his home. He was born on March 23, 1933, in Kalkaska, to Orrie and Ethyl (Rowell) Spence. He attended Evart schools, graduating from Evart High School in 1951, and later attended Grand Rapids Junior College. Jimmie served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1953.\u00a0He married Ruth Pion on Sept. 6, 1958, in Reed City. He was a Grand Rapids resident for 56 years and had been a tool and die maker for General Motors for 42 years.\u00a0He enjoyed camping, his children and grandchildren, and working with his hands. He rebuilt his \u201951 Ford and did a lot of remodeling on his farm. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; three sons, Douglas, of Reed City, Roger (Lindsay), of Livonia, and Steve, of Oswego, Ill.; four sisters, Zoe Ann Reed, of Hersey, Mary (Jerry) McInnis, Carol (Shorty) Couture and Virginia (Ed) Peters, all of Reed City; and five grandchildren. Jimmie was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldon and Bill. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at McDowell Funeral Home in Reed City. Burial will be in Davenport Cemetery, in Newaygo County.\u00a0Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
