REED CITY – Gretchen Crawford, 71, of Reed City, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, in the comfort of her home with her loving husband and family by her side after her courageous fight with breast cancer. Gretchen was born and raised in Reed City, where she graduated from high school in 1960. Gretchen married her high school sweetheart, Fred, and they were happily married for the last 53 years. Gretchen was an only child and was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Clara Bielow. Gretchen leaves behind her husband, Fred; four children, Jackie Judson, of Naples Fla., Jill (Mark) Counterman, of Rockford, Thomas (Lisa) Crawford, of Lowell, and Cristine (Frank) Werner, of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren; two step-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Gretchen loved life. She enjoyed reading, antiques, gardening, bird watching and playing bridge and other card games with her family and friends. Gretchen was a real estate agent for many years and, as a “people person,” truly enjoyed working, helping and being involved with others. She was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was a great Christian role model; one of the most selfless people one could meet. The family is honoring Gretchen’s wish of only having a small graveside service for immediate family. Memorials can be made in her honor to the Reed City Food Pantry in care of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Reed City Public Library, both of which Gretchen had great passion for in the local community.
