Pioneer file photoREED CITY — The Reed City Boy Scouts Pack 174 is looking for sponsorships for its annual Pinewood Derby.
“The Sponsor Traveling Trophy is up for grabs again this year, after Dan Lee from Farm Bureau Insurance won it last year from Gary Bailey of Crossroads Realty,” scout leader Russ Nehmer said.
The 70th annual Pinewood Derby will start at 1 p.m., March 19 at the Reed City Scout Center, 4918 N. Park Street, Reed City.
Sponsor races will go first, followed by scout races. Mayor Roger Meinert will be judging the cars for best design.
The first Pinewood Derby took place in 1953. Cub Master Don Murphy wanted to create a new father-son scout activity he could do with his 10-year-old son, who was too young to participate in the Soap Box Derby.
Murphy had been a model maker all his life, so the idea of racing small cars down a track came naturally. It would be a fun, safe activity for the younger scouts. He presented his idea to the management Club at North American Aviation where he worked. They agreed to sponsor the first
Pinewood Derby, donating trophies and funds to make the car kits.
