William Charles VanHaitsma, of Lake, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw. He was 55.

He was born October 9, 1957, in Flint to Maurice VanHaitsma and Shirley Merritt. He graduated from Evart High School in 1975 and then attended Grand Rapids Business College.

Bill was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was nearly a lifelong Evart area resident, and worked 12 years at Evart Products until his health forced him to retire in 2006.

He married Susan Ann Sutherby on July 20, 2012, in Harrison. Billwas past commander of DAV Post 105 of Lake, Michigan. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan.

He is survived  by his wife Susan VanHaitsma of Lake; daughter Barbara VanHaitsma; stepson Ryan Sutherby; his father Maurice “Mike” (Nancy) VanHaitsma of Prudenville; two sisters, Christina (Paul) Sindoris of Florida and Rhonda Adams of Florida; two brothers, Ronald (Kim) VanHaitsma of Reed City and Marvin VanHaitsma of Benton Harbor, and many nieces and nephews.

His mother, Shirley Barbara Collins preceded him in death in 2011.

Funeral services for William Charles VanHaitsma are 1 p.m. Friday, March 15, at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart with Chaplain Hector Vasquez officiating. Visitation will take place Friday 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
