Thelma L. Bruggema


Thelma L. Bruggema passed away on Feb. 24, 2013, at the age of 102.

She was born to David William and Myrtle Smith (French) in Newaygo County near Hardy Dam and White Cloud.

She moved to Grand Rapids in 1920 where she graduated from South High School and from Blodgett Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1932.

Shortly after graduation she did special duty nursing for former Michigan Governor Fred Green.

She worked as a surgical nurse at the former Reed City Hospital before her marriage in 1935 to Dr. Jacob Bruggema.

Thelma also did special duty nursing for many patients.

She taught several Red Cross home nursing classes during World War II>

She served as a Den Mother of the Cub Scouts and also served as a Girl Scout committee woman for 10 years.

Thelma was president of the Evart PTA and was a member of the Evart Woman’s Club for over 50 years.

She served many years on the bi-annual American Red Cross Blood Bank and participated in the Evart Bowling Leagues for over 25 years.

She has lived in Evart since 1935.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Dr. Jacob Bruggema; two sons, Dr. Jack (Sally Jo) Bruggema in 1993, and Jim (Brigitte) Bruggema in 2010.

She leaves behind nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on February 28, at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart.

The funeral will be held March 1 at 1 p.m. at the Evart United Methodist Church.
