Why does this matter?
The Middle Earth franchise is one of the highest-grossing movie franchises of all time, valued at $5.86 billion, CNBC reports, including a trilogy adapted from "The Lord of the Rings" novels and a trilogy adapted from "The Hobbit."

And, there are plenty of reasons for this high valuation, according to Infobloom:
- There were 19,000 costumes created for "The Fellowship of the Ring."
- Sean Astin put on a whopping 30 pounds for his role as Sam.
- Orlando Bloom performed many of his stunts. He broke a rib at one point during filming.
- "The Fellowship of the Ring" was nominated for 152 awards and won 98 of them, including Oscars, Grammy Awards and Golden Globes.
In celebration of the first film's anniversary, Infobloom looked at Google Trends search data for 15 "Lord of the Rings" characters to see which was each state's favorite.

Utah and Alaska each had a four-way tie for their favorite character.
