Teen steps up: Weinberg takes position as dance studio director

EVART — Dancing has been a passion for 16-year-old Carly Weinberg since she was a little girl. Now, she is stepping up her game as the artistic director of Steppin Up Dance Studio in Evart, located on U.S. 10.

The studio, which has two large dance rooms, was previously owned by Kate Price and Elizabeth Schafer. Price opened a dance studio in Jackson, and the pair handed Steppin Up to Weinberg, who spent years learning to dance within its walls.

Weinberg feels humbled for the faith Price has for her and the studio, and she considers Price a role model, she added. She is excited to share her love of dance with others and help shape future dancers as Price once did for her.

“I love the passion you can feel and express through dance,” she added. “It brings out that artistic movement, it takes a mental capacity and a lot of practice and commitment.”

In addition to lessons in tap, ballet, jazz, modern and hip hop dances, the studio sells leotards as well as new and used dance shoes.

So far, the new position is going well and Weinberg said she enjoys seeing the children’s faces when they accomplish a specific dance move in which they previously struggled.

“This job brings me joy and I feel empowered by God,” Weinberg said. “It takes a lot of lists, planning and moral support from my family, but it’s worth it. I know that this is my place right now.”

Classes are available for both boys and girls as young as 3 years of age to teens through their senior year of high school. Eight Steppin Up alumni dance instructors, including Weinberg, teach a selection of dances, experience levels and age groups. Parent volunteers assist with organization, registration, cleaning and more.

Weinberg has high hopes for the business as it progresses.

“My dream is for this studio to grow,” she said. “I’d like it to eventually be a fine arts studio, where we can have piano lessons and art lessons.”

Upcoming performances include the Christmas carnival at Crossroads Church in Evart and a recital in June. Classes take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and morninga on the second Saturday of each month.
