Seniors learn about COA programs at AARP meeting
REED CITY -- The local AARP Chapter No. 2418 held their regular monthly meeting Feb. 12 at the United Methodist Church in Reed City.
Following a potluck lunch, Osceola County Commission on Aging (COA) director Justin Halladay presented a program outlining services that the COA offers to seniors throughout Osceola County, including Meals on Wheels service and daily lunches available, Monday through Thursday, at the congregate meal sites in Evart, Reed City, Tustin and Marion.
Other services include Medicare and Medicaid assistance, home health aides, homemaking services, transportation services and tai chi classes.
Halladay told the group the COA is in the process of purchasing a property on Upton Street in Reed City, which will become an additional congregate meal site and will house offices and other community programs.
A new program the COA began this month is the Taste of Osceola Lunch Bunch. Seniors are invited to join the COA for lunch at different area restaurants each month. Transportation to and from the restaurant is provided. To sign up for the Lunch Bunch or for information on any of the COA services, call 231-734-5559.
Legislative chairperson for the chapter, Barb Hazlett, presented information on two new bills coming out of the Michigan Legislature.
• The Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse bill amends various acts to make it a crime to assault or retrain an elder or vulnerable adult, and adds felony penalties for such acts.
• The new Department of Insurance and Financial Service Resource is intended to help Michigan drivers navigate the new state auto insurance laws. The hotline for this service is 800-257-3437.
The next meeting for the AARP Local Chapter 2418 will be at noon March 11 at the United Methodist Church in Reed City. They meet the second Wednesday of each month. Everyone is invited to join in.
Attendees are asked to please bring a dish to pass and your own table service.
