Sean Astin of "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy", "The Hobbit" and the 1993 film "Rudy" is scheduled to speak on mental health and representation at Ferris State University on Thursday, Oct. 6.

The actor will address the topic in a seminar at Williams Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m., according to a recent press release issued by the university, explaining it is an opportunity to experience a "heartfelt talk" on mental health issues.

The general public is invited and the event is free to attend. A 30-minute question and answer session with Astin is scheduled to conclude the event.

Student Life Student Outreach Coordinator Ben Avery said Astin’s visit is "significant and timely," in the release.

"Oct. 2–8 is Mental Health Awareness Week," Avery said in the release. "Sean’s message highlights the importance of advocacy, representation and empowerment for those dealing with mental illness, as he continues the legacy of his mother, actress Patty Duke, by being a voice of concern, inclusion and support."

Duke was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when Astin was a teenager. And when he was 16 she published an autobiography revealing her diagnosis, according to FSU in the release.

Astin is expected to speak out against the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

"We are excited to hear Sean’s plea to end the societal stigma related to mental health, as well as having this chance to get to know someone with such stature who has that kind of concern and compassion," Avery said in the release.

People needing arrangements to attend the event are directed to connect with FSU's Center for Student Involvement at 231-591-2606 or csi@ferris.edu.
